upper – intermediate grammar – get used to – be used to “privychnoe delo”

After the gammar notes, you can find a list below for examples / tests. Please see “how to use this site” and “anki – downloading importing” so you can make flashcards from this list and practice it all the time.

In English we can talk about a state (sostoyanie). We us ‘be’

I am cold

Or we can talk about a change in a state. We use ‘get’ /‘become’/’turn’/’go’

I am getting cold (now) , I got cold (yesterday), I will get cold (tomorrow)

What if we want to tell somebody ‘speaking English is normal / not strange for me’?

I am speaking English is normal / not strange for me’ :(

Is not possible, but we can say

I am used to speaking English. (=speaking English is normal / not strange for me’)

For example, I started a job in an international company. At first, speaking English was difficult and not normal, it felt strange. To tell somebody about this, you can say

I was not used to speaking English at work.” (it was not normal for me / it was strange)

For three months you worked and spoke English. How you felt about speaking English started to change. It was becoming more normal for you, it was becoming less strange. You can tell somebody about this by saying

“I was getting used to speaking English in the first three months.” (it was a process, a change, it was becoming normal / not strange for me)

After three months, the process of change finished, you finished it. You can say

After three months I got used to speaking English.  (it became normal / not strange)

Now, it IS normal / not strange to speak English at work, you can say

“I am used to speaking English at work.”

So, here are the sentences

At first I wasn’t used to speaking in English. (It was strange, ne byl priuchen,  ‘ne bylo privychnym delom’)

For three months I was getting used to speaking English (ya privykal)

After three months I got used to speaking English (ya privyk, stalo privychnom delom)

Now I am used to speaking English (ya privyk, delo privychnoe)

Another example.

Franky nedavno priexal v Rossiyu. On seychas ne pivyk k vodke (ego sostoyaniye, seychas neprivychnoe delo).

He is not used to drinking vodka.

On budet mestyats privykat’ k vodke. He will be getting used to drinking vodka for a month. (process)

Posle mesyatsya, on privyknet k vodka. He will get used to drinking vodka (finish the process)

Cherez tri mesyats,on skazhet “ya privyk k vodka. “I am used to drinking vodka / I have got used to drinking vodka.

To help, remember that these three are the same

On privykal = he was getting used to doING

On privykaet = he is getting used to doING

On budet privykat = he will get used to doING

Ya ne mogu k etomu privyknut’ = I can’t get used to doING it

Ya ne mog k etomu privyknut’ = I couldn’t get used to doING it

Ya ne smogu k etomu privyknut’ = I won’t be able to get used to doING it

Ya esche k etomu ne privyk = I still haven’t got used to doING it

Ya uzhe k etomu privyk = I have already got used to doING it

These can be different

On privyk togda = he was used to doING it (ego sostoyanie – he was cold) OR he got used to doING it (izmenenie v sostoyanie – he got cold)

On seychas privyk = he is used to doing it (he is cold)      OR  he has got used to doing it (he has got cold)

Things to remember

1)        The structure: be used to +ing!!! / get used to + ing!!!

2)        There is a similar structure “used to do (NOT doING, and NO ‘get’ / ‘be’)”. This is different. It talks about what we did before, but don’t do now (ranshe ya…)

e.g.

I used to drink vodka (ya ranshe pil vodku, no seychas net)

I am used to drinking vodka (ya prikyk k vodke, pit’ vodku bylo neprivychnoe, no seychas normalno)

3) Pronunciation: Often students say ‘I am used tooooo doing this’ used to – bad pron = used tooo

This gives a strong accent. Native speakers say ‘I am YUsteDOing this (I am used to doing this)’used to – good pron = YUsteDOing

listen and repeat: used to x2, used to speaking x2, get used to speaking x2
